SHS Organizations Update

FCCLA
On Tuesday January 22 thirty members in FCCLA will be participating in STAR. STAR stands for Students Taking Action for Recognition. The thirty members are anywhere from grades 9-12. At STAR the students give speeches and skits in front of judges. FCCLA week is coming up in February. The members were debating on having a Valentines Day dance but they decided it wasn’t going to work.
FFA
On February 20 the members of FFA are having “UNL Day.” The members will go on a tour of the football stadium and talk to athletes there. On February 25 there is FFA fun night. There will be about $2500 worth of prizes and free food! Also, coming up in March FFA is taking their trip to Denver, Colorado.
FBLA
On February 7 some members of FBLA will be participating in a business contest in Beatrice. They will take business tests, quizzes, and job interviews. State FBLA is coming up in March.
Key Club
Key Club is putting on the Multicultural Fair for the Elementary School and various other schools and day cares around Seward. Key Club members select a country and research that country very well. They set up a booth that has games, activities or food that are important to that country for the kids to participate in. The multicultural fair will take place on Monday January 21. After the multicultural the members will start preparing for Senior Citizens Prom that will take place in April.

Swing Choir in Preparation

Swing choir is in full swing this semester preparing for their competion season begining the first weekend in February. The show is entitled "Rain or Shine" and songs include "Knock on Wood", "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" (soloist Megan Lee), "Stormy Weather" (soloist Holly Seher), "Walkin' on the Sun", and "Too Hot to Samba". Choreography was done by Alyssa McConnell, Keri Volnek, and Nate Walden.
Here's the competition times:
Feb. 4- NCDA 3:30 at Norris High School
Feb. 9- Northwest Missouri State
Feb. 14- UNO
Feb. 16- Waconia Star Power Competition (Minnesota)
The Seward High Singers usually travel to Souix City for the "Sing All About It" Competition. However, this year the competition date coincides with the dates picked out for the musical- "Suessical the Musical". The choir will then be doing something new- traveling to MN to compete.
"The show is looking good, we've got a few kinks we're working out, but its pulling together nicely." stated senior choir member Nate Walden. "We're all looking forward to the different competition up in MN."

Seward FFA Competes at Districts
Seward's FFA competed in Leadership Events at Districts Wednesday, December 5th. Twenty-five Seward FFA members competed in the events. The students left Seward at 7:30 and returned around 2:30. The event was held in Aurora.
Events receiving red ribbons were the Senior Parli Pro Team and the Junior Parli Pro Team 2. The Senior Parli Pro team consisted of Kinzi Roth, Tanner Roth, Dakotah Duer, Caleb Krenk, Kaleigh Mueller, and Nathan Klintworth. The Junior Parli Pro Team 2 consisted of Annie Ahrens, Amanda Hemsath, Brooke Beckman, Sam Dierberger, Connor Majerus, Audrey Condon, and Sam Rech.
Blue ribbon winners were the Junior Parli Pro Team 1, consisting of Syd DeBoer, Shelby Yelden, Sarah Garbers, Audrey Barker, Katie Thrailkill, Lexi Kenny, and Reese Pekarek. Maggie Stryson won a blue ribbon in the Job Interview category, Jenna Joins won a blue in Senior Public Speaking, and Jaime Gabel received a blue for Natural Resource speaking.
The big winners for the day were Josh Luff and Kylee Pernicek. Josh Luff, who finished in 3rd place, won a purple ribbon in Extemporaneous Speaking and is an alternate for State. Kylee Pernicek, who received 1st place, won a purple in Junior Public Speaking. She will be going to State with her speech to represent the District. FFA sponsor, Mr. Broderick, commented on the day saying, "I think it takes a special person to be able to speak in a competition and in front of people. Oral communication is a lifelong skill. I'm proud of everyone who competed. Altogether, I think the day went well."

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Approaches

Trick-or-treat for UNICEF is coming up soon! Seward High's Key Club will be collecting money for UNICEF on Monday, October 29th. Members will be assisted by members of Circle-K fro
m Concordia. UNICEF is an organization that raises money for children in less fortunate countries. It helps with food, education and health.
Other upcoming activities for all the clubs at Seward High are the food drive for Blue Valley and the blood drive.
